The shadow-self is a term that describes the many aspects of ourselves we don’t especially like. In fact, we go to great lengths to avoid it. Sometimes, we get so good at ignoring it that we are completely unaware that it’s there.
The shadow self isn’t all bad. In fact, it has an important function in our physical and/or psychological survival. I’ve come to be intrigued by the shadow. All of its mysteries and secrets. Sometimes, the shadow gets caught up in unsavory things. It can’t be easy trying to live in the dark.
When we begin to shed some light on the shadow-self something happens. This process of shedding light is a kind of transformation. Integrating the qualities so that they are less extreme, more balanced, and easier to handle.
Coming to terms with your shadow-self is an important part in the process of gaining more control of your feelings and behavior.
We don’t usually have much practice in meeting the shadow within ourselves. It actually goes against everything it stands for. It doesn’t want to be known or exposed. There is a lot to learn from your shadow self.
I encourage you to be curious about your shadow. Be honest about some of the things you do when you’re feeling threatened and overwhelmed. When does your shadow-self become most active? What does it do?
The more awareness we have the more choice we can have.
