Personal Growth Therapy

The English word therapy comes a Greek word θεραπεία which literally means to cure.

Therapy doesn’t always have to be about a problem. It doesn’t have to be dreadful or painful. We live in a time and place that has a real interest in diagnosing and treating many disorders. Humans are not simple. We will never fit nicely into a single category. We are complex. Beware of people who try to hang a label on you like an object.

Life can be a rough ride. No one gets to never feel pain. Just like the body has many needs to stay healthy the same is true of our minds. Health is a constant process of maintaining balance. We like to pretend that our mental health is as straightforward as our physical. Our mental health and inner world have so many layers and dimensions. It is a mystery.

Sometimes therapy is a place where people reveal their secrets to themselves. Maybe a good therapist helps to influence this conversation. They don’t intrude. They listen closely. They ask questions that lead to your own answer. Your cure.

Therapy can be about accessing your cure. Personal growth therapy is about taking a more active role in your life experience. Therapy can be about getting to know the many layers of yourself. Therapy is such much more than just treating a problem. It should be a safe container where you can meet yourself.

Ways to Maximize Therapy:

  1. Find a therapist who you feel relatively comfortable with. What traits help you to feel nurtured?

  2. Don’t rush it. Be willing to show up for a while. Research shows that people in general need around 6 meetings to feel fairly comfortable and connected. (this goes for anything not just therapy).

  3. Ask for what you need. If that’s difficult….talk about that. Just start with wherever you are and whatever is true for you.

You deserve to have as good life as possible. Therapy with the right person can be the best investment. Learning about what you need to feel the way you want to is invaluable.
